"Unveiling History: The Tale of the Ship Painting"

Welcome to an exciting new series where we delve into the remarkable story of a centuries-old ship painting discovered in the heart of Tavistock. This hidden gem, found during renovations at 4 Market Street, offers a captivating glimpse into the maritime history of the Tudor period and the rich heritage of our town.


You can find a wonderful new interpretation exhibition of the history of the painting and what it tells us of Tavistock's place in history in Tavistock Guildhall.


This short series of blogs explains how the team from Tavistock Heritage Trust, found the painting, researched it's history and provenance and worked with the Devon County Council archeology team and TIDE to bring its story back to life.


The new interpretive display about the ship painting and its hisorical signifigance can be found in the Tavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre. You can take a look right now prior to its official launch on September 7th 2024, the first day of Tavistock Heritage Open Days events.
